Miami football workouts cancelled after three players positive for Covid-19
The Miami football program canceled their workouts on Thursday after three players have tested positive for Covid-19 following multiple reports.
Multiple reports on Thursday afternoon have stated the Miami football program halted workouts after three players have reportedly tested positive for Covid-19. The Hurricanes athletic department will not confirm the reports or which players have tested positive per athletic department policy.
Susan Miller Degnan of the Miami Herald reported that she was told “Out of an abundance of caution and in coordination with our return to campus policy, we elected to postpone today’s workout” by the University. Miami began mandatory workouts on Monday in groups of no more than eight according to Miller-Degnan.
How the Hurricanes will proceed following the cancellation of Thursday’s practice is unknown. The season is very much in peril. Outgoing ACC commissioner John Swafford announced last week that the conference will make a decision known by the end of July on how they will proceed with the 2020 season.
The Big 10 and Pac12 are going to play an all-conference schedule and many expect the ACC to adopt the same plan. On Thursday the Big East and Mid Eastern Athletic Conferences announced the cancelation of all sports for the fall. That includes football for the FCS MEAC. Also confirmed is Miami is testing its players for Covid-19.
Manny Navarro of The Athletic reported that players are getting tested weekly or bi-weekly. The tweet from Navarro also reported that no one has tested positive yet. That had clearly changed as of Thursday afternoon. With the Miami athletic department keeping information in-house, it’s tough to know how they will proceed.
Miami is currently scheduled to begin the 2020 season September 5 against Temple. The way college football is trending that game is very much in peril. Miami will likely play an all ACC schedule if the season takes place at all. Expect the schedule to be made over with Notre Dame possibly added.
