Two former Miami Hurricanes WRs opt out of 2020 NFL Season
Former Miami Hurricanes wide receivers Travis Benjamin and Allen Hurns have announced their decision to opt-out of the 2020 NFL season because of Covid-19 concerns.
Former Miami Hurricanes wide receivers, Travis Benjamin of the San Francisco 49ers and Allen Hurns of the Miami Dolphins announced on Tuesday they have made the decision to sit out the 2020 NFL season because of Covid-19 concerns. Both players announced their decisions yesterday via Twitter.
Hurns posted a note regarding his decision on his Twitter account via the iPhone notes application. Benjamin posted a press release announcing his decision via his representation Age1ncy. Hurns was entering his second season with the Dolphins. Hurns caught 32 passes for 416 yards and two touchdowns in 2019.
Benjamin signed with the 49ers in the offseason after spending the past four years with the San Diego and then Los Angeles Chargers. The NFL Players Association Board of Representatives approved amendments to the 2020 Collective Bargaining Agreement “to protect our players’ health, safety, and financial well-being.”
Benjamin and Hurns were the first players for their teams to opt-out. The Dolphins and 49ers were two of the last teams in the NFL who had yet to have a player opt-out for the 2020 season. Hurns signed a two-year, $7 million contract extension with the Dolphins in the offseason that will now run through the 2022 season.

Benjamin signed a one-year contract with San Francisco in March whose terms were not released. For his career, Benjamin has 208 receptions for 3,143 yards and 19 TD receptions and has added 36 carries for 268 yards. Benjamin also has 1,674 yards in kick returns with four punts returned for TDs.
Benjamin was signed by San Francisco during the offseason to add depth after the 49ers lost veteran WR Emmanuel Sanders in free agency to the New Orleans Saints. San Francisco lost the Superbowl to the Kansas City Chiefs. Benjamin is seventh in Miami Hurricanes history with 131 receptions and 2,146 receiving yards.

Benjamin is 14th in Miami history with 13 receiving TDs. Hurns is ninth in Miami Hurricanes history with 121 receptions and 1,891 receiving yards. The 14 receiving TDs Hurns added in his Hurricanes career is 10th all-time in program history. The 49ers and Dolphins have multiple veteran options to replace Benjamin and Hurns.

Hurns has 241 receptions for 3,380 yards and 25 TDs in his NFL career. The most productive season Hurns had was in 2015 with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Hurns had 64 receptions for 1,031 yards and 10 TDs. Hurns played in four career playoff games. Three with Jacksonville in 2017 and four with the Dallas Cowboys in 2018.
