The Miami losses to North Carolina and Virginia Tech might have been their most heartbreaking in 2019. Miami had the North Carolina won before allowing the Tar Heels to convert on fourth and 17 late in the fourth quarter. Add in more kicking woes and the Hurricanes beat themselves as much as North Carolina beat them.
In the first game of the Sam Howell era and return of Mack Brown to Chapel Hill, UNC took a 17-3 lead after the first quarter. The Hurricanes fought back and took a 25-20 lead with 4:38 remaining in the fourth quarter on a Williams to Will Mallory TD pass. An earlier Baxa miss on a PAT forced a failed Miami two-point attempt.
Howell led North Carolina on the game-winning drive that culminated with a TD pass from Howell to Dazz Newsome with 1:01 remaining. A missed field-goal by Baxa on the final play missed woefully. After losing to Florida to start the season, the Hurricanes’ loss to North Carolina gave them an 0-2 start.

That was the Hurricanes’ first 0-2 start since 1978. This season, the two teams will play on the final day of the regular season on the day that the ACC Championship game was originally scheduled for. The ACC Championship Game will be played either December 12 or 19 to keep schedule flexibility because of Covid-19.
