Redshirt senior Zach McCloud is the only secure starter at LB for the Miami Hurricanes in 2020. Redshirt freshman

Avery Huff

might be the most gifted LB on the Miami roster in 2020. Huff had five tackles and two sacks in the scrimmage on Saturday to make his stake to earn the other starting LB next to McCloud.

At 6’3, 215 pounds, Huff gives Miami the length that Diaz and Baker like on their defense and adds the athleticism needed in modern football.

Huff is competing with sophomore Sam Brooks and redshirt junior Brad Jennings who would start at middle LB with McCloud moving outside to the weakside spot.

Freshman Corey Flagg also had an impactful second scrimmage with two tackles and fumble recovery. Diaz praised the play of flag and freshman Tirek Austin-Cave after the first scrimmage last Sunday. Miami is healthy at LB entering the 2020 season. The Hurricanes were extremely thin at LB in 2019.

The scouting report for Huff on 247Sports projects Huff as a three-down LB with the potential to be a multi-year starter at a high end Power Five program. Post college, Huff is predicated to be a second of third round draft pick. Huff and Brooks are likely to be the corps for Miami at LB in the next two to three seasons.
