Redshirt freshman linebacker Avery Huff is ready to make an impact for the Miami football team in 2020.

Redshirt freshman linebacker Avery Huff is ready to make an impact in 2020. Huff is an elite athlete who will be a part of the rotation for the Miami football team at LB in 2020. Zach McCloud is guaranteed to be one of the two first-team LBs. Bradley Jennings and Sam Brooks are competing to be starters.

If Jennings is first-team he will be the middle LB with McCloud as the weakside LB. If Brooks starts he will likely be the WLB with McCloud in the middle. Learning to play both LB positions in the Miami defense is going to be critical for playing time entering a season that’s unprecedented. Huff will be a big part of the 2020 Miami defense.

Jennings and Brooks have separated themselves with McCloud from the rest of the LBs for Miami just over a week before the season starts. Behind them is Huff. Huff showed he is ready to make an impact for the Miami football team this fall with five tackles, two tackles for loss and two sacks in the second scrimmage on Saturday.

Co-defensive coordinator Blake Baker praised Huff for his play in training camp. Adding Huff to the rotation for the 2020 Miami football season in a part of what should be a far deeper LB corps for the Hurricanes this year.

"“Avery has done some good things. We have a lot of depth in that room. I’m really excited to watch this linebacker room continue to grow. They’ve gotten a lot better in the past month. I’m excited about the future.”"

McCloud is the only experienced LB Miami has returning in 2020. There will be plenty of opportunities for the other LB on the Hurricanes roster to earn playing time this fall. Huff might be the most talented LB on the Miami roster. If he is able to live up to his potential, Huff has a bright career with the Hurricanes.

McCloud will likely leave for the NFL following the 2020 season. McCloud can return in 2021 in what would be his sixth season after the NCAA granted all 2020 fall athletes an extra season of eligibility. Huff will be a key part of the corps for the Miami LBs for the future.
