Miami fans should be grateful for D’Eriq King: UGA QB Jamie Newman opts out

Miami football fans should be grateful for graduate transfer quarterback D’Eriq King after Georgia QB Jamie Newman announced he is opting out of the 2020 season on Wednesday.

The decision by Georgia quarterback and former Miami football prospect Jamie Newman to opt-out of the 2020 college football season should make Hurricanes fans more grateful for graduate transfer QB D’Eriq King. When Miami was searching for a QB through the transfer portal during the offseason they considered Newman.

Newman transferred to Georgia from Wake Forest after considering Maryland, Miami, Oregon and Washington. King was the most accomplished QB in the 2020 transfer portal, but Newman its most highly ranked. Newman made the decision to opt-out of the 2020 college football season to prepare for the NFL Draft.

Newman is the latest of many college football stars to opt-out for the 2020 season. That includes former Miami defensive end Greg Rousseau who is projected to be a high first-round pick. Newman posted his own tweet explaining his decision not to play this fall after the story was initially broken by Yahoo’s Pete Thamel.

Newman took over for an injured Sam Hartman with the Demon Deacons in 2019. In 19 games with Wake Forest, Newman passed for 3,959 yards, 35 touchdowns and 16 interceptions and ran for 826 yards and 10 scores. Wake Forest relied heavily on Run-Pass options something Miami is expected to do in 2020.

During his career with Houston, King thew for 4,925 yards, 50 TDs and 10 interceptions while rushing for 1.421 yards and 28 TDs. Newman has a big advantage in size over King. The former Wake Forest QB is 6’4, 230 pounds compared to King who is listed as 5’11, 202 pounds on he official Miami Hurricanes website.

King will get a chance at Miami to thrive in an RPO power spread offense under new offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee. Lashlee ran the nation’s ninth-best offense in 2019 at SMU. King might be the best QB suited to run the Lashlee offense during his career as an offensive coordinator. Miami football fans should be thankful for King.
