Graduate transfer Quincy Roche leads the defense for the Miami football team in 2019. With Roche, redshirt junior Jaelan Phillips and redshirt sophomore Jahari Harvey will be the corps of a Miami edge rush that should be one of the best in college football.

Redshirt senior Zach McCloud anchors the middle of the Miami defense. McCloud took a redshirt season in 2019 due to decreased playing time and will start at weakside LB for Miami in 2020.

Somewhat of a surprise is redshirt junior Bradley Jennings who is starting at MLB for the Hurricanes after returning from an injury in 2019. Jennings won the battle to start with McCloud over sophomore Sam Brooks.

The listing of Bolden, Carter and Hall at the safeties is not a surprise. The projection has been throughout training camp and from what the coaching staff has said will be a rotation at safety. Bolden, Carter and Hall are all talented and have shown the ability to produce for Miami at safety.

The co-listing of Frierson and Smith at safety was equally expected to begin in 2020. Smith provides Miami with a player used to being in the box as a former safety. Frierson is more adept in pass coverage as a former cornerback. Frierson and Smith should combine to aptly replace Romeo Finley at striker.
