Expect the Miami football program to look at the 2021 transfer portal to add depth at quarterback.

The opt-out of redshirt junior Tate Martell for the 2020 Miami football season hurts the depth at quarterback for Miami longterm. The Hurricanes have three QBs ahead of Martell on the 2020 depth chart. Martell’s decision to opt-out for 2020 will not currently hurt the depth for Miami at QB.

After the 2020 season, the Miami football team is likely to have three scholarship QBs. Graduate transfer D’Eriq King has the option of returning to Miami for a second season with all fall 2020 collegiate athletes having their eligibility frozen. Martell could return to Miami for 2021. At this point, expect Martell to transfer.

The potential departure of Martell would leave Miami with current redshirt junior N’Kosi Perry, redshirt freshman Peyton Matocha and true freshman Tyler Van Dyke entering the 2021 season. College football programs need four or five QBs on their rosters without the ability to add anyone during a season.

Expect the Miami football program to enter the transfer portal to add a QB to the Hurricanes roster for the third straight season. Miami could choose to add a QB who will provide depth or they could attempt to add a high profile signal-caller for the third straight offseason. A lot will depend on what King does.

If King returns Miami adding a QB would become unnecessary. It should also be noted that the Hurricanes do not have a QB committed to what is currently the eighth-ranked recruiting class for 2021. There are several QBs in the transfer portal. Some might be a good fit, but expect Miami to explore the portal at the end of 2020.

Entering 2020 if King enters the NFL Draft as expected, Perry and Van Dyke would be the current front runners to compete to be the starting QB. What route Miami potentially goes in the transfer portal or adding a freshman will depend on how confident the Miami coaching staff is in the development of Perry and Van Dyke.

A few four-star QBs are in the transfer portal. Two to watch are former Maryland starter Kassim Hill who recently left Tennessee and James Foster of Texas A&M.  With transfer season still four months away, the likelihood is that any QB Miami will pursue in the transfer portal is not currently entered there.

With the way the 2020 season will play out with this season not counting against eligibility there could be more transfers than we have seen in recent seasons. Miami is going to need to add depth at QB. The Hurricanes staff will monitor the transfer portal as the season progresses into the offseason in January.
