Florida State played Miami as a ranked team since they were 23rd and defeated 10th ranked Miami at Hard Rock Stadium in 2016.
Miami ended a seven-game losing streak as the 13th ranked team at Florida State 2017. Miami has to overcome a 27-7 deficit as the 17th ranked team to win at Hard Rock in 2018. Miami won 27-10 in a dominant performance by their defensive line last season without either team entering the game ranked.

The last four seasons of the Florida State Miami football rivalry began with the end of the Jimbo Fisher era for the Seminoles through two seasons of Willie Taggart in 2018-19.
