Miami Hurricanes TEs should have success against Clemson
Miami Hurricanes tight ends Brevin Jordan and Will Mallory are poised for success against a Clemson defense that has been susceptible to the position in recent years.
Teams that have had offensive success against Clemson in recent seasons have been able to move the ball utilizing the tight end. Miami Hurricanes tight ends Brevin Jordan and Will Mallory are as good as any Clemson has played according to Tigers defensive coordinator Brent Venables.
Jordan has been the most explosive TE in the ACC in 2020. In the first three Miami Hurricanes games of 2020, Jordan has 12 receptions for 212 yards and three TDs. Jordan is second in the ACC among TEs in receptions and yards, but first in yards per reception and receiving TDs. Mallory has two receptions for 27 yards and one TD.
Mallory is capable of far more production than he has had in his Miami career. In the 47-34 Miami victory over Louisville, Mallory had a 74-yard reception called back because of a Hurricanes false start. Jordan and Mallory have been lauded for the mismatches they can cause as a TE tandem in the Miami offense.
Thus far, Jordan has primarily been the TE Miami has utilized in the three seasons since he and Mallory signed in 2018. Mallory played well at the end of the 2019 season when Jordan was out with an injury. Mallory had 12 receptions for 206 yards to close out 2019. Those numbers are nearly identical to Jordan in 2020.
Venables referred to Mallory and Jordan as the best duo that he has coached against. Miami offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee likes to utilize multiple formations and a lot of motion. Expect Lashlee to lineup Jordan and Mallory in multiple spots against Clemson to give the Tigers different looks.
"“It’s the best tandem I’ve coached against for sure. They’re athletic like the Alabama tight ends we’ve faced before, the Notre Dame tight ends. Brevin is super athletic out in space, coming out of the backfield. The catch-and-run with both tight ends is pretty unique.Their ability to get open. Have great instincts, toughness, size. Great catch radius and lateral movement. They like all of it. They are very well-rounded tight ends. They are not just flex guys. They can get in-line and block you well and they can block in the screen game and they can go vertical and win against anybody. They can get into 11, 12 sets and four-wide too. They give them a lot of versatility in different spots.”"
Jordan has scored a TD in all three Miami Hurricanes games in 2020. The Wake Forest TEs combined for four receptions for 84 yards in the season opener against Clemson. Virginia had three receptions for 25 yards and a TD from TE Tony Poljan against Clemson last week. The opportunties should be there for the Miami TEs.
The Clemson defense has been as stout this season as in past year. Clemson does not have the experience or athleticism at linebacker and safety they have had in the past few seasons. If Lashlee can scheme getting the ball to Jordan and Mallory in open space Miami will have success from their TEs.
