Virginia Cavaliers QBs numbers reminiscent of early NFL
The tradition of having a number draft for the Virginia football team has created a quartet of quarterbacks for the Virginia Cavaliers that is reminiscent of the early NFL.
Otto Graham became a Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback wearing number 60 for the Cleveland Browns from 1946-51. Virginia Cavaliers head football coach Bronco Mendenhall created a number draft at Virginia allowing players to be awarded for their play in training camp and picking their numbers based on performance.
The QBs for the Virginia Cavaliers are reminiscent of that era. Lindell Stone has received the majority of the snaps with starter Brennan Armstrong out and wears number 36. Number 99 Keytaon Thompson and number 98 Ira Armstead have also received playing time with Armstrong sidelined.
The numbers changing for Virginia make it difficult for those that do not follow the Virginia Cavaliers football team closely. Players can change numbers from year to year depending on the draft. Fans that see Virginia play occasionally have commented on social media about the unusual numbers at QB.
Jared Rayman is the fifth QB on the Virginia roster. Rayman is not likely to play but wore number 92 in 2019 and is number 60 this season. The oddities of the numbers on the Virginia football roster can be attributed to the Cavaliers’ number draft and the lack of restrictions on numbers assigned to positions like the NFL has.

Bryce Perkins led Virginia to its first ACC Coastal Divison title last season. Perkins wore the far more traditional number three for the Cavaliers at QB. Virginia is not alone with unusual numbers for their QBs. Bernie Kosar wore number 20 for the 1983 National Championship Miami Hurricanes.

Miami lost to Boston College in the the infamous 1984 game when number 22 Doug Flutie threw a hail mary on the final play the day after Thanksgiving in the Orange Bowl. The numbers by the Virginia QBs are reminisicent of old school football. With the Virginia numbers draft that should continue.
