The high school coach of top Miami football prospect Jake Garcia gave an update following his first game at Grayson, his new school in suburban Atlanta.
Four-star Miami football prospect, quarterback Jake Garcia who is currently committed to USC played his first game for Grayson High School in suburban Atlanta on Friday. The game was telecast by ESPN. In an interview with the Atlanta Journal-Constitution Grayson head coach Adam Carter discussed Garcia’s performance.
Garcia will share time at Grayson with Class of 2022 QB prospect Deyon Cannon who led Grayson to a 6-0 start. Cannon initially replaced Florida commit Carlos Del Rio who now plays for Cartersville High School. Del Rio is compared to former Miami QB Stephen Morris who played in the NFL from 2014-18.
Garcia completed four passes in 11 attempts for 179 yards and a touchdown in the 37-7 win for Grayson over Parkview on Friday night. Cannon finished 8-10 for 127 yards and a TD in the victory. Cannon does not yet have a ranking in the Class of 2022. Garcia is on his fifth high school in an attempt to play this season.
Garcia transferred to Grayson from Valdosta after his home state of California postponed football until the spring. Carter spoke about the adjustment that Garcia has had to make to Grayson, his relationship with Cannon and the offensive line and his assessment of their first game with their newest QB.
"2. “You have a prominent new player on your team, Jake Garcia. Your current starting quarterback, Deyon Cannon, has led the team to an undefeated season so far. How are you and your staff and the players managing that unusual situation? Jake has come into our program and has been nothing but awesome. He has developed a relationship with Deyon, our offensive line and our coaching staff very quickly. He is all business and handles himself like a pro. This young man just wanted to play football his senior year.Jake would have been eligible anywhere in the state once he moved from Valdosta, just like a few other situations around the state, but he chose Grayson, and we are happy to have him. I feel like Friday night went as well as anyone could ask for.We had a plan for how we would use both quarterbacks, and the plan played out well. We will continue to find ways for both young men to help our football team.”"
Despite Garcia being currently committed to USC, the Miami football recruiting staff continues to speak to him. The Trojans currently have four-star QB Miller Moss and recently offered four-star QB Jaxson Bart. Garcia has been rumored to flip with the likelihood of Miami after Moss committed to USC in May.
Miami currently has four scholarship QBs on the roster. Graduate transfer D’Eriq King has the option of returning next year with the NCAA granting an extra year of eligibility. Redshirt junior N’Kosi Perry could move on as a graduate transfer. Miami additionally has redshirt freshman Peyton Matocha and true freshman Tyler VanDyke.
