Miami football victory keyed by Jaelan Phillips dominant performance

Jaelan Phillips was unblockable as the Miami football team won 25-24 at Virginia Tech Saturday.

Redshirt junior defense end Jaelan Phillips was dominant with eight tackles, three tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks as the Miami football team won 25-24 at Virginia Tech on Saturday. The Miami defense turned in another clutch performance in the fourth quarter holding Virginia Tech to 56 yards to key the comeback win.

Phillips had his second straight dominant performance. Saturday’s domination of the Virginia Tech offensive line was more impressive than Phillips’ game against North Carolina State earning the ACC DL of the Week. Phillips finished with 10 tackles, 1.5 TFLs, one sack and one pass breakup against the Wolfpack.

Phillips had three tackles, 1.5 TFLs and one sack in the fourth quarter. The Miami defense stifled their opponent in the fourth quarter for the second straight game. Miami held NC State to six yards of offense in the final 15 minutes last week. Phillips now has 37 tackles, nine TFLs and took the Miami lead with six sacks this season.

Miami has six sacks as a team on Saturday. Gilbert Frierson had two, linebacker Sam Brooks one and cornerback Te’Cory Couch teamed with Phillips on the other one. Miami has not been recording sacks this season like they have in past years under Manny Diaz. Phillips could rise as high as fourth in the ACC in sacks.

The Miami football team faces Georgia Tech next week who is sixth in the ACC allowing 2.14 sacks per game. The Yellow Jackets have not played the last two weeks. Miami will face a Georgia Tech offense averaging 373.7 yards per game which is 12th in the ACC. Phillips should continue to dominate.

Expect Phillips to earn his second straight ACC Defensive Player of the Week when the awards are announced on Monday. In the last three games, Phillips has become the star of the Miami defense. Against Virginia, NC State and Virginia Tech, Phillps has 25 tackles, 4.5 TFLs and three sacks in Miami victories.
