Miami Hurricanes offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee could be a candidate for the head coaching opening at South Carolina per multiple reports.

The opening at South Carolina created by the firing of head coach Will Muschamp could cause Manny Diaz to have to search for an offensive coordinator for the third straight offseason according to multiple reports. Miami Hurricanes offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee could be a candidate per multiple reports.

Barrett Sallee of CBS Sports is the most reputable college football writer reporting Lashlee could be considered for the Gamecocks opening. South Carolina might be looking for an offensive-minded coach. The Gamecocks are 74th nationally averaging 27.3 points per game and are 84th in total offense averaging 370.1 yards per game.

Lashlee has drastically improved the Miami offense this season. The Hurricanes are 39th in scoring averaging 33.2 points per game and 42nd in total offense averaging 436 yards per game. Miami was 90th in scoring in 2019 averaging 25.7 PPG and 98th in total offense averaging 367.2 yards per game.

The other likely candidates to replace Muschamp at South Carolina according to Sallee are Liberty head coach Hugh Freeze, Coastal Carolina head coach Jamey Chadwell Cincinnati head coach Luke Fickell and Louisiana head coach Billy Napier. Lashlee could be at a disadvantage without head coaching experience.

Lashlee does have experience coaching at a high level. In 2013, Lashlee was the offensive coordinator when Auburn when the Tigers lost in the last BCS National Championship Game to Florida State on a Jameis Winston to Kelvin Benjamin touchdown pass with two seconds remaining.
