The Miami football team with Brigham Young are the only two who began the season unranked and are now currently in the top 10.

The Miami football team is one of two programs with Brigham Young who are currently ranked in the top 10 who were unranked to begin the season. Miami is currently ninth in the USA Today Coaches Poll and 10th in the Associated Press Top 25. The Hurricanes moved up from 12th in the AP Rankings this season.

BYU is currently eighth in both polls. Miami entered the rankings 17th following their season-opening win over UAB. The Hurricanes jumped to 12th after winning 47-34 at then number 18 Louisville. Miami continued to move up reaching a season-high of seventh following a 52-10 victory over Florida State.

Miami dropped to 13th following a 42-17 loss at Clemson which is the lowest they have been since the victory over Louisville. The Hurricanes have fluctuated in the AP Rankings since then. BYU is 9-0 this season after finishing 7-6 in 2019. The Cougars entered the rankings 21st after a 55-3 dismantling of Navy.

BYU entered the poll on September 13. The Cougars have been ranked eighth the last two weeks which is their season-high and the highest they have been ranked since BYU was seventh week three in 2009. When Miami was seventh this season it marked the Hurricanes’ highest since they were second week 13 in 2017.

Manny Diaz has the Miami football program ranked for 10 straight weeks. That is also the longest stretch since the Hurricanes were ranked for 24 straight weeks from the last poll of the 2016 season through the first seven weeks of the 2018 season when Diaz was the Miami defensive coordinator.

Miami has far exceeded the national expectations this season. The Hurricanes are scheduled to finish this season at Wake Forest on December 5, host number 25 North Carolina on December 12 and tentatively Georgia Tech on December 19 depending on if Miami is still in the race for the ACC Championship.

The impact the Hurricanes game has on the participants in the ACC Championship Game will also determine if they play the Yellow Jackets. BYU and Miami fit the average of 1.97 unranked preseason teams finishing the season ranked in the top 10. Ironically Miami won its third national title in seven years in 1989.
