Offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee told reporters on Monday he is not concerned that the Miami Hurricanes football program does not have a quarterback committed to their 2021 class.

The Miami Hurricanes football program does not have a quarterback committed to their 2021 class. Offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee who was hired in January attributed the late start and what he stated as most of the 2021 QBs being committed at the time of his hiring as why Miami doesn’t have a 2021 QB commit.

Miami currently has four quarterbacks on their roster. With 2020 fall sports athletes being granted an extra year of eligibility all of the Hurricanes signal-callers have the option of returning in 2021. Graduate transfer D’Eriq King has taken the majority of the snaps in 2020 with redshirt junior N’Kosi Perry backing him up.

Redshirt freshman Peyton Matocha and true freshman Tyler VanDyke are the future for Miami at QB. King has a decision on whether or not to return for a sixth season of college football and second year at Miami following the season. Miami would have to flip a 2021 high school recruit or add a transfer to sign a 2021 QB.

The most likely QB for Miami to add for 2021 at this point is Georgia HS QB

Jake Garcia

who is committed to USC. Garcia moved to Georgia after California canceled their fall HS football season. A transfer QB is a strong possibility for Miami if King doesn’t return but who that could be is currently unidentifiable.

"“We’re always looking to add the best quarterbacks [to] our roster…We feel good about guys we’re still recruiting. Feel very good about guys on our roster and feel good about guys in later classes we’re recruiting. We’re optimistic we’re going to find the right guy. Just signing a quarterback doesn’t do you any good if he’s not the right fit.Quarterbacks get recruited a year ahead of every other position.”"

Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald quoted Lashlee above during his press conference. There are two ways to look at the outlook Lashlee has on the QBs for the Miami Hurrianes for the future. Being patient and not overreacting to reach for a QB that doesn’t fit the system or is not talented enough to play at Miami is the right thing to do.

The Miami Hurricanes cannot afford to enter the 2021 season with only Matocha, Perry and VanDyke at QB. The possibility exists that Perry could decide to transfer leaving Miami with two QBs entering 2021. The Miami coaching staff is likely working behind the scenes on either flipping someone or adding a transfer.
