The Miami basketball team hopes to rebound from a tough loss against Florida Gulf Coast on Saturday in their 2020-21 ACC opener against Pittsburgh Wednesday night.

The Miami basketball team begins ACC play on Wednesday night in a precarious position with the possibility of having only six scholarship players available. Senior guards Chris Lykes and Kameron McGusty and center Rodney Miller are questionable with injuries suffered over the past few games.

Lykes has a sprained ankle, McGusty a hamstring injury and Miller hurt his groin in warmups before Saturday’s loss to Florida Gulf Coast. Guard Elijah Olaniyi could make his Miami debut with the NCAA expected to allow all transfer immediately eligibility. That decision will not be made until 5 PM Eastern Time on Wednesday.

Miami and Pittsburgh are scheduled to tipoff at 6 PM. Olaniyi average 18.0 points per game, 6.5 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.6 steals for Stony Brook last season. Olaniyi played three seasons for the Seawolves providing him with one season of eligibility remaining. First time transfers already enrolled would all be granted the waiver.

Lykes has sat out the last two games and McGusty was hurt after playing four minutes in the loss to Florida Gulf Coast. Sophomores Isaiah Wong and Harlond Beverly played 40 and 39 minutes against the Eagles. Wong leads Miami averaging 17.0 PPG this season and is third on the Miami basketball team averaging 6.3 RPG.

Pittsburgh has won four straight games after losing its season opener against in-state rival St. Francis. The loss to the Flashes was similar to Miami’s loss to Florida Gulf Coast. Pittsburgh had a comeback against Northwestern in the ACC-Big 10 challenge similar to Miami’s rally against Purdue last week.

The winner of the season opener would be a good boost for a pair of teams hoping to bounce back from seasons one game under .500 in 2019-20. Almost all of Pittsburgh’s scoring comes from Justin Champagnie, Xavier Johnson and Au’diese Toney. Champagnie is averaging 19.4 PPG and 13.0 Johnson 16.8 PPG, 4.8 RPG and 6.6 APG.

Toney is at 16.4 PPG, 5.0 RPG and 2.6 APG. Miami has more scoring balance throughout their lineup with seven players averaging in double figures. Lykes, McGusty and Wong are the only Miami players averaging in double figures. Beverly and Olaniyi should pick up the scoring with Lykes and McGusty out.
