Jake Garcia signing with the Miami Hurricanes football program on Wednesday made him the highest-ranked quarterback to sign with the Hurricanes since Kyle Wright in 2003.

The Miami Hurricanes football program signed their highest-ranked quarterback since Kyle Wright in 2003 with the addition of Jake Garcia on Wednesday. Garcia is the 46th ranked overall player according to the 247Sports composite, the fifth-ranked pro-style QB and the fifth-ranked player in Georgia in 2021.

Wright was the third-ranked player nationally, top-ranked QB and second-ranked player in California in the Class of 2003. Wright is the 60th ranked player all-time in the 247Sports era. In four seasons with Miami, Wright completed 59.2 percent of his passes for 5,835 yards, 38 touchdowns and 31 interceptions.

Garcia transferred to Grayson High School outside Atlanta after transferring from California via Valdosta High School in Southern Georgia. In six games for Grayson entering Friday night, Garcia has thrown for 916 yards, completed 58.6 percent of his passes for 10 TDs and three interceptions this season.

Garcia should eventually compete with freshman Tyler Van Dyke to be the Miami starting QB. Who the Miami starting QB is against Alabama in the 2021 season opener will depend on what starter D’Eriq King decides to do. King has the option of returning for next season. Miami could sign a transfer QB if King leaves.

Garcia is an accurate passer with the mobility to move in the pocket or run when he has to. In a completely different era, Wright was not often an effective runner. Wright did have five straight games with positive yardage running as a senior. The misconception about the Rhett Lashlee offense is that it needs a QB who can run.

King has 520 rushing yards and four TDs this season, but QB Shane Buchele ran for only 105 yards and two TDs in 2019 when Lashlee was the offensive coordinator at SMU. Lashlee has proven throughout his career as an offensive coordinator and ability and willingness to adapt his scheme to his QB.

Whether it is 2021 or 2022 Garcia and Van Dyke should have a competitive battle to be the starting QB for Miami. Van Dyke was the 222nd ranked player and seventh-ranked pro-style QB in the Class of 2020. Neither Garcia nor Van Dyke is the playmaker King is, but Miami should have more playmakers at running back and WR.
