Quarterback D’Eriq King chose to return to the Miami football program for the 2021 season despite receiving a Senior Bowl invitation.

An invitation to the Senior Bowl is prestigious for college football players and a chance to work with NFL Staffs for a week preparing for the draft. Quarterback D’Eriq King turned down an invite to the January 2021 game according to the game’s executive director Jim Nagy. King will return to the Miami football program in 2021.

King made the announcement on Saturday via social media and Nagy followed with his own tweet stating the Senior Bowl extended an invite to the Miami QB. Nagy praised King saying he is a “Heckuva a football player” and that he respects his game and decision to return to Miami.

Defensive Quincy Roche and kicker Jose Borregales are Miami football players that are participating in the Senior Bowl this season. Trevon Hill represented Miami in the 2020 Senior Bowl. As King said announcing his return for 2021 the NFL will always be there and so will the Senior Bowl.

Part of the decision by King to return for the 2021 season was the opportunity to work with offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee for a second straight season. King has never worked with the same offensive coordinator in consecutive seasons during his collegiate career. King will be able to grow at QB in 2021.

King is the perfect player for the Senior Bowl. There is a lot of question whether or not King will be a QB in the NFL. Returning to Miami for the 2021 season provides King with another chance to prove he can be a QB in the NFL. At about 5’9 many have questioned if King can play QB in the NFL.

Supporters of King point to sub 6’0 QBs Russell Wilson and Kyler Murray and their ability to utilize their athleticism at QB. King is an inch or two shorter than Wilson who is listed at 5’11 and Murray who is listed at 5’10. If King participates in the 2022 Senior Bowl he will likely receive time at running back and wide receiver.
