Miami Hurricanes head coach Manny Diaz said quarterback D’Eriq King will be re-evaluated on Wednesday following the Cheez-it Bowl loss to Oklahoma State.

Following a game-ending knee injury in the Cheez-it Bowl loss to Oklahoma State on Tuesday night, Miami Hurricanes quarterback D’Eriq King will be re-evaluated and is expected to have an MRI on Wednesday. King suffered the injury on a scramble in the second quarter after he cut and then was tackled.

D’Eriq King announced on Saturday that he was taking advantage of the NCAA extending an extra year of eligibility to all fall sports athletes. The Miami offense was elevated in 2020 because of the play of King and the addition of new offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee.

King completed 63.5 percent of his attempts for 2,570 yards, 22 TD passes, five interceptions and ran for 520 yards and another four TDs. The status of King’s injury was not known in the postgame. King left the game with help walked nearly the entire length of the field to the Miami locker room.

The Miami football team was given a boost when King returned to the sidelines on crutches.

N’Kosi Perry

came on in place of King and the Hurricanes nearly rallied in a 37-34 loss to Oklahoma State. Perry finished 19-34 for 228 yards and two TDs. King was 10-13 for 113 yards and one TD and ran for 18 yards.

Manny Diaz spoke to reporters in the postgame about what to expect with King. The MRI on Wednesday will have a huge impact on his future. King suffered a meniscus injury at Houston in 2018 that caused him to miss the last two games of the season. No information was available when King will have the MRI.

"“In terms of D’Eriq, we will evaluate him on [Wednesday] and know more…That is really all we can say at this point. It is really all we know at this point…."

Perry was valuable to have on the 2020 Miami football roster. The decision for Perry on what he does for the future could depend on how seriously the injury to King is. If King is out for an extended period of time through the beginning of the 2021 season, Perry could return to Miami next season.

If the injury to King is not serious Perry could look to transfer where he could be near certain he is a starter. The expectations for the 2021 Miami football team could depend on what the MRI shows with King on Tuesday. Miami showed fight after King went down. The Hurricanes trailed 21-7 at the time of the injury.

Perry finished the drive with Miami in the RedZone and ended with a Jose Borregales field goal. Miami scored 24 more points with Perry leading the offense. The Hurricanes were hindered by drops throughout the game, particularly after Perry came in to relieve King. More information about King should be available Wednesday.
