The decision by junior Cam’Ron Harris to return for his senior season creates a crowded running back corps for the Miami football program in 2021

Junior Cam’Ron Harris announced via Twitter on Friday that he intends to return to the Miami Football program in 2021. The decision by Harris creates a crowded running back unit for Miami next season. In addition to Harris, freshmen Don Chaney Jr. and Jaylan Knighton and incoming freshman Thad Franklin.

Harris led Miami with 631 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns and added 18 receptions for 131 yards and another TD. Chaney ran for 322 yards and three TDs with 11 receptions for 143 yards and Knighton had 209 rushing yards with one TD and 11 receptions for 135 yards and one TD.

Harris posted a long message on Twitter in which he said he has things to work on to prepare for the NFL and wants to get his degree. Harris is the first first-team RB to begin the season returning to Miami since Mark Walton came back in 2017. Walton was a junior during the Hurricanes ACC Coastal Divison title season.

Harris often split carries with Chaney and Knighton this season. After the North Carolina State game, Harris tweeted about a lack of respect. Harris was clearly frustrated with only one second-half carry against the Wolfpack in a come from behind 44-41 Miami victory. Harris led Miami in 2020 in rushing yards.

Only D’Eriq King had more carries for Miami this season. Harris had 126 carries this season, Chaney 68 and Knighton 52. Harris had a second meme in his Twitter post after explaining why he came back. The second page was a picture of Harris with the phrase “Let’s Run it Back.”

Offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee and RB coach Eric Hickson will be challenged getting carries for Harris, Chaney, Knighton and Franklin. The Hurricanes could choose to redshirt Franklin, but that seems unlikely. With Harris and King leading the Miami run, the Hurricanes improved significantly on the ground in 2020.

Miami improved from 118.23 rushing yards that ranked 120th nationally in 2019 to 162.55 RuYdPg and 68th in 2020. With another in the Lashlee system and all the key rushers returning for Miami in 2021, Harris and the Hurricanes should continue to improve running the football in 2021.
