Miami football roster opens up with DE/LB Patrick Joyner in transfer portal
The entry of defensive end/linebacker Patrick Joyner into the transfer portal opens up a scholarship for the Miami football program.
The Miami football roster has another open scholarship with the announcement by redshirt sophomore defensive end/linebacker Patrick Joyner that he is entering the transfer portal. Miami has tight scholarship numbers. The Hurricanes should have four left to give with the decision by Joyner to seek another school.
Joyner recorded only six tackles and 2.5 sacks in two seasons playing for Miami. Joyner redshirted as a true freshman in 2018 playing in the limit of four games. Those four games were the most productive for Joyner in his Hurricanes career with five tackles and 2.5 TFLs. In a simple Twitter post, Joyner said “Thank you Miami.”
Joyner played 15 snaps receiving his most playing time of the 2020 season with one tackle in the 37-34 Miami loss to Oklahoma State in the Cheez-it Bowl. With Joyner moving on, Miami has redshirt freshmen Jahfari Harvey and Cameron Williams, true freshman Chantz Williams and transfer De Andre Johnson remaining at DE.
Johnson announced he was transferring to Miami late on Sunday night. Miami added to their edge rushers by signing four-star DE Jabari Ishmael and three-star linebacker Thomas Davis who is projected to move to DE at Miami. With Joyner in the transfer portal, Miami could decide to add another DE for 2021.
Joyner played in regular-season games against Florida State, Virginia Tech and North Carolina. After missing most of the 2019 season with a leg injury, Joyner was moved back to DE from LB at the beginning of the 2020 season. Joyner played in high school at South Dade in Homestead and signed with Miami in 2018.
Johnson is the only experienced DE currently projected on the Miami football roster for 2021. The Hurricanes could seek to add another edge rusher for this fall. The loss of DEs Jaelan Phillips and Quincy Roche to the 2021 NFL Draft with Joyner leaving Miami might seek out another DE for the 2021 season.
