Jose Borregales was named the winner of the Groza Award as the best kicker in college football following one of the best seasons by a kicker for the Miami football program in its history.

Jose Borregales had one of the greatest seasons by a kicker in the history of the Miami football program. On Thursday, Borregales was honored with the Groza Award as the best kicker in college football. Borregales made all 37 of his points after touchdowns and 20 of 22 field goals this season.

The 97 points Borregales scored this season rank 10th in Miami history. Borregales would have challenged the all-time record if Miami would have played a full season of 13 games. Todd Sievers set the all-time Miami record with 119 points during the Hurricanes national championship season in 2001.

Sievers accomplished the Miami single-season scoring record by a kicker in 12 games. Running back Willis McGahee set the all-time Hurricanes single-season scoring record overall with 168 points on 28 touchdowns in 2002. With one more game, Borregales would have had a good chance to move as high as fourth for Miami.

Borregales helped stabilize a Miami kicking game that likely cost the Hurricanes two to three victories in 2019. Three Miami kickers made 12 of 20 field-goal attempts during the 2019 season. After four PATs and one field goal against UAB in the season opener, Borregales gained national acclaim in week two.

The FIU transfer went five for five on PATs and made all four of his field-goal attempts including one from 57 yards in a 47-34 Miami victory over Louisville. Borregales made all five of his field-goal attempts from 20-29 yards in 2020, went 6-6 from 30-39 yards, 7-9 from 40-49 yards and 2-2 from 50 plus.

Borregales finished his collegiate career with 378 points. If Borregales played his entire career with Miami, that would have ranked third in Hurricanes history. Current Los Angeles Chargers kicker Michael Badgley holds the Miami career record with 403 points from 2014-17.

The legacy Borregales began at Miami will continue beginning in 2021. Borreagales’ brother Andres signed with the Miami football program in December. Andres is the third-ranked kicker in the 2021 class. If he stays all four seasons with the Hurricanes, Andres will have a chance to break Badgley’s career scoring record.
