The Miami football program has hired former South Carolina defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach Travaris Robinson as their new DB coach.

Former South Carolina defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach Travaris Robinson who is an elite recruiter has been hired by the Miami football program as their new defensive backs coach. The title for Robinson seems to be that he will coach safeties and cornerbacks after those duties were previously split.

Former Miami co-defensive coordinator Ephraim Banda who also coached safeties left the Hurricanes to take the same position to be the play-caller of the Aggies defense. Former Miami cornerbacks coach Mike Rumph was not retained. Robinson is a Miami native who graduated from Coral Park High School.

Robinson was a DB and wide receiver at Auburn from 1999-2002. Following college, Robinson spent two seasons in the NFL with the Atlanta Falcons and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Robinson began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Auburn in 2006-07. Robinson spent the last five seasons at South Carolina.

The stint in Columbia was the longest of Robinson’s career. Robinson knows South Florida well as a recruiter. In addition to being a South Florida native, Robinson was defensive backs coach at Florida under Will Muschamp who he also served under at South Carolina. Robinson was the 12th best recruiter in the SEC in 2020.

The hiring of Robinson as the DBs coach leaves Miami with one coaching position open. Robinson will be tasked with upgrading a CB unit that is woefully thin on depth. Miami has only six CBs projected on its 2020 roster. Rising seniors Al Blades Jr. and D.J. Ivey, sophomore Te’Cory Couch and freshman Marcus Clarke and Isaiah Dunson.

Three-star athlete Malik Curtis who Miami plans to play at CB was the only signee at the position for the Hurricanes in the 2021 class. Robinson has three five-star signees to his credit in his career. Vernon Hargreaves III and Teez Tabor are CBs Robinson signed at Florida. Defensive tackle Jordan Burch signed with South Carolina.

Robinson has coached multiple secondaries that have finished among the best nationally. The best season for a Robinson coached secondary was in 2011 when Florida finished sixth nationally in passing yards allowed per game.  Robinson has a big task ahead of him to improve the depth at CB for Miami.
