Miami Hurricanes quarterback Tate Martell and N’Kosi Perry intend to finish their studies this semester and transfer after that according to recent reports. Martell and Perry were both redshirt juniors in 2020. Perry is expected to move on as a graduate transfer with two years of eligibility remaining.

The expected departures of Martell and Perry leave Miami extremely inexperienced behind starting QB D’Eriq King. King is returning from a torn ACL he suffered in the Hurricanes 37-34 loss to Oklahoma State in the Cheez-it Bowl. Backing up King are redshirt freshman QB Peyton Matocha and freshman Tyler Van Dyke.

Jake Garcia who signed in the 2021 Class last month will also have a chance to become the second team QB for Miami. None of the backups on the 2021 Miami roster have completed a pass in college. Van Dyke was 0-2 and had one carry for a loss of seven yards. Matocha had two carries for five yards without a pass attempt.

The plan for Perry as clarified by Manny Navarro of The Athletic last week to graduate early came after the QB withdrew from the transfer portal. Perry gave Miami an experienced QB and nearly led the Hurricanes to a comeback from a 21-0 deficit against Oklahoma State. Spring practice will be intriguing at QB.

In three seasons playing for the Miami Hurricanes after a redshirt freshman season in 2017, Perry completed 52.4 percent of his passes for 2,484 yards, 24 touchdowns and 10 interceptions, while rushing for 217 yards and three TDs. Martell opted out of the 2020 season after playing sparingly for Miami in 2019.

In his only season with Miami, Martell completed his only pass attempt for seven yards and ran seven times for another seven yards. In one season at Ohio State in 2018, Martell completed 23 passes in 28 attempts for 269 yards, one TD and no interceptions and ran 22 times for 128 yards and two TDs.

Martell transferred to Miami in January 2019 a few weeks after Manny Diaz was hired as head coach. Former Miami QB Jarren Williams beat out Martell and Perry to become the starter in August 2019. Perry and Williams shared that role for most of the season. Williams chose to transfer after Miami added King.
