The Miami football program has to continue adding talent at quarterback with starter D’Eriq King entering his final season in 2021.

Miami has signed three-star QB Peyton Matocha in 2019 and four-star signal-callers Tyler Van Dyke in 2020 and Jake Garcia in 2021. Spring practice will be critical for the Miami QBs.

King is out until August after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament in his knee in the Hurricanes Cheez-it Bowl loss to Oklahoma State in December. Garcia, Matocha and Van Dyke will compete for first-team snaps during the spring and a chance to become the second-team QB behind King during the 2021 season.

Garcia was a huge signing for the Miami football program in the Class of 2021 after the California native was committed to USC for over a year. After the Trojans offered Jaxson Dart as the third QB in their class, Garcia de-committed from USC. Garcia ultimately flipped to Miami on National Signing Day in November.

Garcia and Van Dyke are the prohibitive co-favorites as the heir apparent to King in 2021 unless the Miami football program seeks another transfer at QB. Matocha adds depth. Whoever Miami signs at QB in 2022 would likely join the Miami football team and redshirt in his first year while learning the Rhett Lashlee offense.

The Lashlee up-tempo spread offense is helping Miami in recruiting. Players want to play in the more modern system than the pro-style that Miami operated in the two previous offensive coaching staffs. Garcia and Van Dyke were pro-style QBs signing out of high school but are both athletic enough in the run-option.
