The Miami basketball team will open the ACC Tournament against Pittsburgh who will also be shorthanded. Miami has played shorthanded the entire season. Pittsburgh will be without their second and third-leading scorers, Xavier Johnson and Au’Diese Toney in the ACC Tournament tip-off game.

Miami began the season without a full team and things got worse from there. Forward Sam Waardenburg was lost for the season in preseason practice with a foot injury. During the course of the season, guards Chris Lykes and Harlond Beverly, center Rodney Miller and wing Earl Timberlake suffered season-ending injuries.

In addition to the above group who could have been on the floor at the same time for Miami, the Hurricanes dismissed freshman forward Matt Cross in January. Half the scholarship players on the Miami basketball team are gone with six scholarship players remaining on the Hurricanes roster.

Guards Isaiah Wong who was named third-team All-ACC on Monday, Elijah Olaniyi and Kameron McGusty, forward Anthony Walker and center Nysier Brooks have had to play heavy minutes with the Miami roster depleted. Brooks is the Miami player to have played in every game this season. McGusty missed seven games.

Wong, McGusty and Olaniyi each average over 32 minutes per game. The lack of depth for Miami will not be as pronounced against Pittsburgh. Making a long run in the ACC Tournament will be difficult for Miami with the number of minutes the five starters and forward Denk Gak coming off the bench will have to play.
