The Miami basketball team gained some much-needed good news on Monday with the addition of George Mason transfer and former Virginia High School Player of the Year Jordan Miller. Miller averaged 13.0 points per game, 5.9 rebounds and 1.0 steals in three seasons playing for the Patriots.

Miller was named second-team All-Atlantic 10 in 2020-21 after averaging 15.8 PPG, 6.1 RPG and 2.0 assists as George Mason finished 13-9, 8-6. Miller was part of a mass exodus of transfers from George Mason following the firing of head coach Dave Paulsen last month. George Mason had no NCAA appearances under Paulsen.

The addition of Miller to the Miami basketball program is critical after the Hurricanes lost four transfers of their own. Nysier Brooks transferred to Mississippi, Chris Lykes to Arkansas, Elijah Olaniyi returned to Stony Brook where he transferred to Miami from last year and Earl Timberlake moved on to Memphis.

Miller has been compared to Timberlake in build and playing style at 6’6, 205 pounds. Miller is far more experienced than Timberlake with 69 career games and 66 starts. Timberlake dealt with multiple injuries in his freshman season in 2020-21 with seven games and three starts.

Miller will join a Miami basketball roster expecting to return Harlond Beverly, Deng Gak, Rodney Miller, Sam Waardenburg and Anthony Walker. Miami signed guard Nisine Poplar and forward Jakai Robinson during the early signing period in November in the Class of 2021 and has a commitment from guard Bensley Joseph.

Miami is coming off of its third straight losing season. The fallout from the Adidas scandal for which Miami was exonerated, injuries, suspensions and transfers have all hindered the Hurricanes over the past three seasons. Jim Larranaga has had to continually rebuild the Miami basketball roster due to the above-mentioned issues.

Miami did not sign any high school players in 2018 and does not have either Matt Cross or Timberlake who were Miami’s only signees in the Class of 2020. Cross was dismissed by Miami in January and subsequently signed with the Hurricanes ACC rival Louisville. Larranaga coached at George Mason from 1997-2001.
