The Miami Hurricanes offense returns 10 starters in 2021. Tight end Brevin Jordan who was a fifth-round pick of the 2021 NFL Draft is the only starter the Miami offense lost from last season. Will Mallory who is entering his fourth season is expected to see a huge increase in production in 2021.
In three seasons, Mallory has 43 receptions for 659 yards and seven touchdowns. All of the Miami TEs missed the spring game. Mallory, 2021 signee Elijah Arroyo, and second-year Dominick Mammarelli were out with injuries and third-year TE Larry Hodges was suspended from the Hurricanes final scrimmage last month.
Entering the summer, Mallory is as close to a guaranteed starter on the Miami Hurricanes roster. Arroyo is the likely second-team TE with Hodges, Mammerelli and incoming 2021 signee Khalil Brantley battling for snaps. Arroyo was an early enrollee. Brantley will arrive later this year. The Miami TE unit has a bright future.
Mallory is entering his fourth season in college but has two years of eligibility remaining. On Thursday Mallory was rated as the 26th ranked player for the 2022 NFL Draft, by CBS Sports. After being the eighth-ranked TE in the Class of 2018, Mallory seems likely to exceed that in the 2022 NFL Draft.
Hodges was not used much in his first two seasons playing behind Jordan and Mallory. In 10 career games, Hodges has three receptions for one yard and two TDs. Both of Hodges’ TDs came in 2019 against Bethune-Cookman. Mammerelli is more adept as a blocker. In 10 games in 2020, Mammerelli did not record a reception.
Brantley is not as highly regarded as Arroyo but is an adept receiver that can develop and eventually become a key receiver for Miami. The 2021 season could become a key year of transition for Miami at TE. Mallory is expected to be the dominant player at the position with the other players developing.
