In a tweet posted on Memorial Day, former four-star USC defensive tackle signee Jay Toia announced he is leaving the Trojans after one semester in in their program. Toia mentioned the Miami football program is on the shortlist of programs he is considering with Michigan, Utah and UCLA.

The Utes and Trojans have a history of Samoan players on their roster. Toia could speak to Miami safety Bubba Bolden who transferred from USC during the 2019 offseason. Toia would be a key addition. Jon Ford is entering his fifth and final season in the Miami football program. Several other Miami DTs are 2022 NFL Draft eligible.

Entering his fourth season with Miami, Nesta Silvera will have a decision to make after the season on whether to stay with Miami or enter the NFL Draft. Third-year DT Jared Harrison-Hunte could also enter the NFL Draft if he develops as much in 2021 as he did in 2020. Jalar Holley is in his third season but hasn’t had much playing time.

The 6’2, 315-pound Toia was the 186th ranked player, 26th ranked DT and 15th ranked player in California in the Class of 2021. Signing Toia would pair him with 2021 signee Leonard Taylor who was the 10th ranked player in the class, fourth-ranked defensive lineman and third-ranked player in Florida in 2021.

Miami is exceptionally deep at DT entering 2021 but could be thin in 2022. Jordan Miller who is entering his fourth season and swing DL Elijah Roberts are also on the Miami football roster. Ford, Harrison-Hunte, Silvera and Taylor are likely to receive the most snaps in the Miami rotation at DT in 2021.

dark. Next. Miami football begins huge recruiting month

Miami faces a transitional 2022 offseason at many positions. The Hurricanes are going to need to add a few DTs in the Class of 2022 and through the transfer portal depending on the decisions of the players who are eligible for the draft. Signing another high-level DT should be helped by the presence of Taylor.
