The Miami football team will enter the 2021 season behind North Carolina as the favorite to win the ACC Coastal. If the Hurricanes can capture the division title can they put together a good enough 60 minutes to upset Clemson. Miami would have to improve greatly this season after losing 42-17 at Clemson in 2020.

Clemson beat Miami 38-3 in the 2017 ACC Championship Game. Add in a 58-0 beating in the final game under Al Golden in 2015 and Miami has gotten outscored 138-20 in their last three games against Clemson. D’Eriq King gives Miami a chance against anyone they play, but the entire Miami team needs to prove they belong.

Without divisions in 2020, the Miami football team had the best record in the Coastal at 7-2 in the ACC in 2020. The 62-26 loss to North Carolina in the regular-season finale lingers. Miami nearly staged a dramatic comeback against Oklahoma State in the Cheez-It Bowl after falling behind 21-0. The Cowboys won 37-34.

The biggest question for Miami entering the season will be how well King recovers from his torn ACL against Oklahoma State. King is expected to be ready for the season opener against Alabama on September 4 in Atlanta. Barrett Sallee of CBS Sports proclaimed Miami to be a value pick in the ACC in 2021.

"“Value pick–Miami (FL): I think Clemson is going to win the ACC. It’ll probably do it with ease. But if you think that the Hurricanes — or Tar Heels, for that matter — have even a slight chance of putting together 60 good minutes in Charlotte to upset the Tigers, it’d be fiscally irresponsible not to take either of the ACC Coastal front-runners.For the ‘Canes, it’s all about the O. D’Eriq King, assuming that he’s healthy, is one of the most dynamic playmakers in the country, offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee is the perfect coach to fit his skill set and there’s no shortage of talent on that side of the ball.Yes, the defense has to fill some holes, particularly up front, but I trust coach Manny Diaz to put together a competent crew at the very least.”"

The expectation is still that Clemson will win the ACC in the article titled “2021 ACC championship odds, picks: Clemson favored to keep streak intact, but Miami comes with good value.”  The Tigers have won the last six ACC Championship. Clemson also has six straight College Football Playoff Appearances.

Until they prove it on the field there is going to be skepticism about the Miami football program. Earlier this spring, the 2017 Hurricanes Coastal Division title was labeled as a one-hit-wonder. In 17 seasons in the ACC, 2017 was the only year that Miami appeared in the conference title game. The Coastal is there for the taking.
