The announcement on Thursday that the Miami football program will play Auburn in 2029 and 2030 could pay dividends for the Hurricanes in the future. Miami will host on September 1, 2029, in what will likely be the season opener. The Hurricanes will travel to Auburn and Jordan Hare Stadium on August 31, 2030.

The second game of the series will also likely be the season opener. The Auburn and Miami football teams have not played since the 1984 Kickoff Classic at Giants Stadium. That game was the debut for Jimmy Johnson at Miami and featured Bo Jackson playing for Auburn. Auburn leads the all-time series with Miami 7-4.

The Hurricanes are opening the 2021 season against an SEC team for the third time in the last four seasons. Miami will play Auburn archrival Alabama on September 4 at Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta. The Hurricanes lost to LSU in the 2018 season opener and Florida in 2019.

Alabama begins a stretch of nine times in the next 10 seasons that Miami will play an SEC team in non-conference. That stretch will culminate with Auburn in 2030. The Hurricanes play Texas A&M in 2021 and 2022, Florida in 2024 and ’25 and South Carolina in 2026 and ’27 before playing Auburn.

The majority of the meetings between the Hurricanes and the Tigers occurred in the 1950s and 1960. Auburn and Miami played six times between 1953 and 1968. The Tigers defeated the Hurricanes in five of those six games. Miami will likely enter the game in 2029 with a two-game winning streak against Auburn.

The only thing that would change Miami playing Auburn with a two-game winning streak in the series against the Tigers would be if the teams meet in a bowl game before that. Miami last played an SEC team in the postseason when they lost to South Carolina in the 2014 Independence Bowl.

The ACC and SEC have four potential mutual bowl tie-ins for the 2021 season. The ACC and SEC will definitely match up in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl and Tax Slayer Gator Bowl. An SEC team will play an ACC or Big 10 team in the Outback Bowl and the Union Home Mortgage Gasparilla Bowl will feature teams from the American, ACC, or SEC.
