Miami football could take light 2022 class to leave transfer spots open
The Miami football program has used the transfer portal as well as any team in the country. Miami signed four transfers in the Class of 2022. Miami could take a class of around 18 signees in 2022 to keep the transfer portal open again. Two late additions to the Miami football program are expected to count towards the 2022 class.
Running back Cody Brown and offensive lineman Justice Oluwaseun transferred to Miami during the offseason and are expected to have their scholarships count towards their 2022 Class. Brown transferred to Miami after being released from his National Letter of Intent he signed with Tennessee in December.
Olusawseun comes to Miami after spending the last four seasons with UNLV. Miami OL coach Garin Justice was in the same position with the Rebels in 2018 and 2019 before being hired by Miami. Miami also added defensive end DeAndre Johnson, wide receiver Charleston Rambo and cornerback Tyrique Stevenson as transfers.
Miami currently has quarterback Jacurri Brown, cornerback Khamauri Rogers and wide receiver Landon Ibieta committed for 2022. With the extra year granted by the NCAA across all sports in 2020, Miami will likely not know who is returning for the 2022 season until 2021 is complete. That puts the roster in transition.
In a mock 2022 recruiting class, David Lake of Inside the U projects that Miami will sign 18 players. Lake projects the Hurricanes to use their remaining five scholarships in the Class of 2022 on transfers. Because Cody Brown and Oluwaseun count towards 2022, they take up two of the 25 scholarships allowed per class.
Miami could be inexperienced at defensive end entering 2022 with the imminent departures of Johnson and super senior Zach McCloud. Jahfari Harvey should be the third DE in the rotation in 2021 and could earn more playing time with production. Harvey will be eligible for the 2022 NFL Draft.
Behind Harvey are Cameron Williams and Chantz Williams. Linebacker could be another position that Miami could target through the transfer portal. That would likely depend on who returns and many many LBs Miami signs in the Class of 2022. All the Hurricanes LBs on the 2021 roster have eligibility remaining beyond 2021.
Defensive backs and WR is the most frequent position Miami has signed through the transfer portal. Who is available during the 2022 offseason will also impact who Miami would target as a transfer. There has to be mutual interest between player and program and a fit. It is difficult to project transfers in the future.
