Miami Hurricanes QB Jacurri Brown bright future despite not named Elite 11
An invitation to participate in the Elite 11 quarterback camp is a high honor for rising senior signal-callers. Miami Hurricanes 2022 QB commit Jacurri Brown participated in the Elite 11 this weekend. Brown missed out on being named one of the Elite 11 QBs at the camp but still has a bright future ahead of him at Miami.
Four-star Brown and the 176th ranked player, 12th ranked QB and 18th player in Georgia for 2022. A.J. Duffy who is committed to Florida State and Clemson commit Cade Klubnik who won the MVP were the only ACC commits named in the Elite 11. All of the Elite 11 QBs except Luther Richesson are committed to Power Five programs.
Three-star Richesson from Nashville is currently uncommitted. Brown is the only other QB committed to an ACC program who participated at Elite 11. Nate Johnson from Clovis, California and Tevin Carter from Memphis were the only other uncommitted QBs who participated in Manhattan Beach, California this weekend.
Katin Houser from legendary St. John Bosco in Bellflower, California, committed to Boise State, was the lone committed player to a Group of Five school to participate in Elite 11. Current Miami Hurricanes QB Tyler Van Dyke competed at the Elite 11 Camp in 2019. Getting an invite to the Elite 11 is a huge honor.
Brown will join a Miami QB room in 2022 that includes Van Dyke, 2022 signee Jake Garcia and 2019 signee Peyton Matocha. Brown, Garcia and Van Dyke will be the likely competitors to replace elite QB D’Eriq King as the starter in 2022. Brown has the best skill as a runner among the three favorites to become the starter.
The Miami QB room is the deepest it has been in many years. During the 1980s, when Miami was dubbed QB U, no program had the depth at signal-caller as the Hurricanes. Miami is not at that level yet, but the competition to become the first team QB in 2022 and beyond should be where the Miami staff wants.
Garcia is the highest-ranked QB on the Miami Hurricanes roster for 2021 and is projected to be the top-rated for 2022. Elite 11 is an important achievement but it is not the ultimate determining factor for success as a QB in college. Garcia was not chosen to the Elite 11 for 2020 which ultimately wasn’t held because of COVID.
Brown has skills as a runner that Garcia and Van Dyke do not possess. If Brown does not win the QB job in 2022 as a true freshman the Miami coaching staff might find packages for him in the Hurricanes offense. Brown has run for 3,323 yards in high school with 44 TDs and 14 100-yard games. The future for Brown is bright.
