Miami football building elite secondary with 4-star athlete Chris Graves commitment
The commitment from four-star athlete Chris Graves who the Miami football program projects to play cornerback is building an elite secondary for the Hurricanes future. Miami signed Avonate Williams who was the second-ranked safety in the Class of 2020 and James Williams who was top-ranked at the position in 2021.
Four-star cornerback Khamauri Rogers committed to the 2022 Miami class earlier this year. Travaris Robinson who was hired as defensive backs coach during the offseason and DeMarcus Van Dyke who was promoted to CBs coach from the recruiting staff were credited with the commitment from Graves.
Miami currently has four-star quarterback Jacurri Brown and three-star wide receiver Landon Ibieta in addition to Rogers committed for 2022. The addition of Graves moved the 2022 Miami class from 78th to 71st. Miami beat out LSU and Robinson’s former school, South Carolina for the commitment from Graves.
Graves is a cousin of 2021 Miami signee Malik Curtis and they were teammates at Bishop Verot in Fort Myers. As a junior in 2020, Graves had 26 tackles, two interceptions, four pass breakups and two fumbles recoveries. Graves contributed 27 receptions for 500 yards and four touchdowns on offense.
The 2022 Miami class has been criticized for only having three commits, now four with Graves. Miami is expected to receive a commitment from three-star CB Nick Cull. Several other 2022 prospects who are strongly considering Miami are expected to make their commitments public before their seasons start in August.
The Miami football staff has taken a more methodical approach to the 2022 recruiting class than their rivals. With only four commits, the Hurricanes have work to do in the next five months. The next few weeks could be critical for Miami in the Class of 2022. It is too soon to be concerned about the Class of 2022.
Graves is the 288th ranked player, 15th ranked athlete and 34th in Florida in the Class of 2022 according to the 247 Sports composite rankings. Graves told 247 he spoke 2021 Carolina Panthers draftee Jaycee Horn who played for Robinson at South Carolina and that cemented his decision to commit to Miami.
