Entering the second season under offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee the Miami football team should continue to develop. The Hurricanes return 10 starters on offense. The experience Miami has entering the 2021 season will create more competition in training camp and provide the Hurricanes with more depth.
Even with the depth and experience back for 2021, Miami has players at each position on offense they cannot afford to lose. Miami has little experience behind quarterback D’Eriq King and tight end Will Mallory and needs the efficiency of wide receiver Mike Harley. Miami is more stable at running back and on the offensive line.
King revolutionized the Miami offense in 2020. Under Lashlee, the Hurricanes ran the spread for the first time last season. King is the prototype dual-threat QB. King completed 64.1 percent of his passes, which was second-best in Miami history for 2,686 yards, 23 touchdowns and five interceptions, and 538 rushing yards.
King added four rushing TDs. At running back, Miami returns over 90 percent of its production. Cam’Ron Harris, Don Chaney Jr. and Jaylan Knighton will compete for carries for Miami in 2021. Lashlee stated during the offseason he wants a RB to emerge as the primary ball carrier this season.
The passing game is expected to improve for Miami in 2021 with the addition of WR Charleston Rambo. Rambo should be a deep threat for Miami to complement Harley in the slot. Experience on the OL is expected to turn what was a huge flaw during the 2019 Miami football season into a potential strength in 2021.
Miami returns a college football record 190 starts upfront in 2021. The Hurricanes OL will be led by center Corey Gaynor entering his third season as a starter and left tackle Zion Nelson, projected as a consensus first-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. Miami has exceptional depth on the OL.
