Miami Hurricanes Most Important RB Don Chaney Jr.

Some positions are more obvious than others. Running back is the most wide-open position on the Miami offense to compete for snaps in 2021. Entering the start of training camp on August 6, Cam’Ron Harris returns for his second season as the starter. In 2020, Chaney showed the most versatility of the Miami RBs.

The versatility Chaney provides the Miami offense makes him the most important RB for Miami in 2021. Chaney is expected to be ready for the 2021 season after offseason shoulder surgery. Chaney’s classmate, Jaylan Knighton missed the end of the 2020 season with shoulder surgery.

Harris led Miami with 643 rushing yards and 5.0 yards per carry in 2020. A midseason slump by Harris was troubling. Harris needs to be more consistent in 2021 to hold off Chaney and Knighton this season. Chaney had his best game late in the 2020 season with nine carries for 62 yards and four receptions for 81 against Duke.

Harris rebounded from the midseason slump and was productive in four of the last five games in 2020. More consistency from Miami running is critical in 2021. Opponents were often able to make Miami one-dimensional in 2020 by daring King to make big plays throwing downfield. That should change in 2021.
