The Category 5 team made of primarily Miami Basketball alums have advanced to the third round of The Basketball Tournament. Tenth-seeded Category 5 earned their second straight upset with a 76-69 victory over second-seeded Red Scare. Red Scare was primarily made up of Dayton alums.

Davon Reed bounced back from a five-point outing on Saturday to lead Category 5 with 21 on Sunday. Rion Brown scored 18 and Zach Johnson scored 10 each as the other Category 5 players on double figures. Category 5 won their first-round game over Wolf Blood a North Carolina State alumni team.

Another strong defensive performance keyed the victory for Category 5. Category 5 held Red scare to 40 percent from the floor. Category 5 shot 57 percent from the floor and 9-20 three-point attempts. Darryl Davis led Red Scare with 29 points. Devin Oliver was the only other player for Red Scare in double figures with 10.

Category 5 plays the winner of Xavier alumni team third-seeded Zip Up Crew and sixth seed Blue Collar who represents the University of Buffalo on Tuesday in Columbus. The winner advances to the quarterfinals at Dayton Arena on Saturday. Dayton traditionally hosts the First Four in the NCAA Tournament.

Miami has a team full of experienced players with deep tournament runs. Reed and Kamari Murphy were on the 2016 Hurricanes that reached the NCAA Tournament regional semifinals. Brown played for Miami in 2013 when the Hurricanes won the ACC regular season and tournament championships.

Miami also reached the regional semifinals in 2013. Brown has been outstanding for Category 5 leading them in scoring through the first two games. In their 74-65 victory over Wolf Blood, Brown led Category 5 with a matching 18 points to his Sunday output. Miami will need Brown and Reed to continue their scoring prowess.

Category 5 will enter their next game as an underdog for the third straight contest. Zip Em Up won their first-round game 91-67. Blue Collar Crew advanced with an 88-82 victory in their TBT opener.
