The Miami football team begins the 2021 season with high expectations with 19 starters returning. Miami opens the season on September 4 at Alabama. The Hurricanes play their first game at home a week later against Appalachian State. Miami has a few potential trap games on the 2021 schedule.

After Appalachian State, Miami hosts Michigan State and Central Connecticut State to close out its non-conference schedule. Virginia will visit Hard Rock Stadium on September 30 to conclude four straight home games after playing Alabama in Atlanta in the season opener. A visit to North Carolina on October 16 follows Virginia.

If Miami gets through its non-conference schedule with a 3-1 record, the Hurricanes could be caught looking past Virginia if they are not focused. The game at North Carolina is being viewed by most as the de facto ACC Coastal Division Championship Game. A week following UNC, Miami plays a tough North Carolina State team.

The Hurricanes and Wolfpack had an epic battle in 2020. It took Miami quarterback D’Eriq King throwing for 430 yards passing and five touchdowns and rushing for 105 yards for a 44-41 victory in Raleigh last season. A week after playing NC State Miami travels to Pittsburgh which is considering the trap game by 247 Sports.

"NO. 15 MIAMI: AT PITTDate: Oct. 30Miami is coming off back-to-back tough games against North Carolina and NC State in this spot. It could be chilly at Heinz Field, and this is not going to be the type of electric atmosphere that gets the visiting team charged up.Pitt, however, could be quite good this season with 13 starters returning from last year’s squad that went 5-5 in the ACC. Kenny Pickett is the type of veteran quarterback who finds a way to keep his team in games even without putting up huge stats, and Pitt hung around late at Miami last season."

Pickett is back with Pittsburgh for his fifth season. In 2017 making his first collegiate start Pickett led the Panthers to an upset over 10-0 Miami. The Miami football team already clinched the ACC Coastal Division title when they played Pittsburgh in 2017. Miami was coming off emotional home wins over Notre Dame and Virginia Tech.

Miami defeated Pittsburgh 33-19 last season largely because the Hurricanes held the Panthers to four field goals in five trips to the red zone. Pittsburgh scored a TD on their other red-zone trip following an interception return to the Miami one yardline. Games against the Panthers are always physical grind-out games.

The Miami football team was able to stay focused and win games they were expected to in 2020. The next step for the Hurricanes is winning the big games. The Panthers present a challenge, but for Miami, their outcomes against Alabama and North Carolina will likely determine how good their 2021 season can be.
