Miami Hurricanes quarterback D’Eriq King is ranked among the top players in college football in almost every ranking entering the 2021 season. King has usually been ranked from 10th to 25th best college football player entering the 2021 season. The decision by King to return this fall provides Miami with stability throughout the team.

King is one of 19 Miami Hurricanes returning starters for 2021. The only starter the Hurricanes lost on offense was tight end Brevin Jordan. Will Mallory is poised to have a breakout season replacing his fellow 2018 Miami signee Jordan. King has helped head coach Manny Diaz redefine the culture for the Miami football program.

King made the Miami offense a much watch in 2020. The addition of Oklahoma transfer wide receiver Charleston Rambo should boost the Miami offense in the deep passing game. The addition of Rambo gives Miami an added dimension to the offense in 2021. Miami should also have an improved offensive line.

The 138 accumulative returning starts on the Miami offensive in the most in college football history. Miami will be anchored by left tackle Zion Nelson and center Corey Gaynor upfront. King has the experience and talent surrounding him on offense to improve from 2021 and have another special year with Miami.

"No. 12 D’Eriq King, QB, MiamiNot only is King among the most dynamic quarterbacks in the country – he played wide receiver as a true freshman at Houston – he’s also a ceiling-raising presence. Just consider what he did at Miami in Year 1.The Hurricanes jumped from 78th in 2019 to 40th nationally last season in yards per play largely because of King’s presence. This is despite Miami’s WRs dropping 23 passes and generally average o-line play in front of him. King changed Miami’s trajectory last year much in the same way he can change a game: In an instant."

The above summary is from a 247 Sports article about “College football’s top 50 players for the 2021 season.” King being ranked 12th is a testament to the talent, versatility and magnetism he brings every game. Several times King’s will and production carried Miami to victory. The 44-41 victory at N.C. State was indictative.

King threw for 430 yards and five touchdowns without an interception and ran for 105 in the Hurricanes’ victory over the Wolfpack. That was only the second time in the last five years a player has accomplished those numbers. King previously had a 400/100 game when he played for Houston.

Rambo should help alleviate the drops that played the Miami Hurricanes WR corps in 2020, particularly Mark Pope and Dee Wiggins who are entering their fourth seasons. King has the ability when a play breaks down to make something happen. Rambo’s ability to get deep should help King when scrambling.

In their second season with King at QB and Rhett Lashlee as offensive coordinator, the Miami offense should continue to develop. With the potential to put bigger numbers than 2020, King can rise into the top 10 best college football players and make a run at several postseason awards including the Heisman Trophy.
