Miami football 15th in complete CBS Sports FBS rankings

The Miami football program is ranked 15th by CBS Sports in their rankings released on Monday. CBS ranked all 130 teams in FBS. Miami is ranked third in the ACC by CBS behind second-ranked Clemson and number eight North Carolina. The Hurricanes play at the Tar Heels on October 16. Miami does not play at Clemson in 2021.

Alabama who Miami opens the season against in Atlanta on September 4 is the number one ranked team. Miami enters the 2021 season with 19 returning starters. The Miami important was the decision by quarterback D’Eriq King to return for his second season with the Hurricanes and sixth in college football.

Miami returns 10 starters on offense and nine on defense. The Hurricanes have to replace tight end Brevin Jordan on offense and defensive ends Jaelan Phillips and Quincy Roche on defense. Replacing Jordan is fourth-year TE Will Mallory. DeAndre Johnson and Zach McCloud are the starting projected DEs in 2021.

Alabama and North Carolina are the only opponents on the 2021 Miami football schedule ranked in the top 30. The next highest-ranked team is North Carolina State who is 34th. The other two Miami FBS non-conference opponents other than Alabama are number 43 Appalachian State and 74rth ranked Michigan State.

Miami also plays FCS Central Connecticut State in non-conference. Other teams of note on the Miami schedule are Virginia at 39, Florida State at 55 and Duke as the lowest-ranked team the Hurricanes will play at 90th. Miami has a mostly advantageous schedule to have a successful 2021 season.

Winning 10 games for the first time since 2017 and only second time since 2004. King’s return for the 2021 Miami football season provides the Hurricanes with high expectations. The additions of transfers, Johnson, cornerback Tyrique Stevenson and wide receiver Charleston Rambo have upgraded the Miami roster.

Miami will likely be favored in every game this season except for Alabama and North Carolina. Miami is currently given a 52.3 percent chance to defeat the Tar Heels via the ESPN Football Power Index. Expect the odds makers at sports books to make North Carolina a slight point spread favorite.

After finishing 6-7 during the Manny Diaz’s first season in 2019, starting off the 2021 season ranked 14th is a quick turnaround. King and offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee who is entering his second season are the biggest reasons the Miami football team will enter the 2021 season ranked in the teens.
