Miami Hurricanes quarterback D’Eriq King is their most valuable recruiting tool per 247 Sports college football expert Josh Pate on Monday. The season King had in 2020 has already paid dividends for the Miami football program with the addition of quarterback Jake Garcia in the Class of 2021.

King and offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee transformed the Miami Hurricanes offense from the antiquated pro-style into an uptempo spread in 2020. Miami finished 26th in scoring offense in 2020 averaging 34.0 points per game. The Hurricanes were 32nd in total offense in 2020 averaging 439.8 yards per game.

The Miami Hurricanes improved on offense from 25.7 PPG which was 90th in 2019. The Hurricanes improved their offensive output in 2020 from 367.6 yards per game in 2019. King and Lashlee have made what should be a lasting impact on the Miami football program, particularly on offense and at quarterback.

In addition to signing Garcia in 2021, Miami has four-star QB Jacurri Brown committed for 2022. Another offensive output and a successful season in 2021 like they had in 2020 should set the Miami football program up to be able to recruit the top QB prospects in future classes. Miami is already set up for the future at QB.

"“It turns 2021 into a giant marketing campaign for Manny Diaz and Rhett Lashlee and the Miami offense…you get a star quarterback who is put on display for the nation to see. Other QBs see it, other receivers see it and if they do what I think they are capable of doing this year. If D’Eriq King does live up to those lofty expectations this year.Rhett Lashlee his first full year and second year in the program with this offense if it performs at an optimum level and every QB in America including in Florida see it and all that South Florida wide receiver talent seeing it, it could very well be what pushes a future Miami recruiting class over the top.It could be what lands you one or more elite QBs and WR talent. It’s not just WR talent. A safety could look at Miami and say the big boys are going to Miami, I can stay in South Florida and have a chance to win games at a high level I’ll stay home…It could be a much bigger domino than anyone realizes."

When analysts like Pate take notice of what King and Lashlee are building with the Miami football program, particularly at QB, the Hurricanes are on the right track. Diaz has been saying all offseason what King means is bigger than his accomplishments on the field. King is helping Miami change the culture at QB.

Miami struggled with leadership at QB in 2019, the year before King arrived. Young Miami QBs, Garcia, 2020 signee Tyler Van Dyke and Peyton Matocha are learning how to play the position and the importance of being a leader from King. Brown will in turn learn from those three. Diaz and Lashlee are building a culture with Miami.
