Miami football agrees to series with BYU had memorable 1990 loss
The Miami football team announced on Thursday they will host Brigham Young in 2026 and travel to Provo, Utah in 2028. The Hurricanes had a memorable home and home with the Cougars in 1988 and 1990. Miami defeated BYU 41-17 in 1988 but suffered a memorable 28-21 loss in Provo in 1990.
The 1990 win by BYU essentially began the successful Heisman Trophy campaign for Ty Detmer. Detmer was 38-54 for 406 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. Miami traveled out west as the defending National Champions. Miami was unable to turn five BYU turnovers into a win.
The trip to Provo will be the further West the Miami football program will travel since a loss at Washington in 2000 precipitated a trek to winning the 2001 National Championship. BYU finished 11-1 in 2020. The Cougars are led by Kalani Sitake who is 38-26 in five seasons. The Cougars improved from 7-6 the two previous seasons.
Miami Dolphins fans will be able to watch former Cougars quarterback Zach Wilson in the NFL. Wilson was selected second overall in the 2021 NFL Draft by the rival New York Jets. Detmer had a 14 year NFL career but only made 25 career starts from 1996-1999 and 2001. BYU and Miami had a legacy of QBs in the 1970s and 1980s.

BYU has been an independent since leaving the Mountain West Conference after the 2010 season. In every sport except football BYU is a member of the West Coast Conference. The WCC does not offer football. Miami now has three non-conference games scheduled for the 2026 and 2028 seasons.
Miami will host Florida A&M on September 12, 2026, as previously stated, BYU on the 19 and travel to South Carolina on an unspecified 2026 date. The 2026 game against the Gamecocks is the first half of a home and home. Miami will host South Carolina on September 11, 2027. Miami last played South Carolina in 2014.

In 2028 Miami is scheduled to play at BYU on September 2, host South Florida on the 9 and play at Notre Dame on an unspecified date. Miami versus USF is part of a three-game series between 2025-2028. Miami will play Notre Dame seven times between 2024 and 2037.
