In a video posted to the Miami Hurricanes official YouTube page, head coach Manny Diaz frequently mentioned the big numbers put up by freshmen in the first scrimmage of training camp on Sunday night. D’Eriq King was efficient at quarterback spreading the ball around to what should be a deep Miami wide receiver corps.

King was 12-16 for 124 yards and two touchdowns. Diaz mentioned that King was impressive by extending plays with his legs, making it tough for the Miami Hurricanes defense to defend. Mike Harley and Charleston Rambo will mentor a group of talented young WRs Miami signed in 2020 and 2021.

Rambo who transferred from Oklahoma during the 2021 offseason finished with 60 yards and a receiving TD that Diaz called a beautiful catch. Freshman WR Jacolby George finished the night with seven receptions for 127 yards and a TD that according to Diaz came on a slant. Freshman Romello Brinson had four for 73.

Fourth-year Miami WR Mark Pope who is expected to be moved to the slot behind Harley had three receptions for 56 yards. Freshman WR Breshard Smith who will compete with Harley, Pope and second-year Xavier Restrepo for snaps in the slot had two receptions for 30 yards. Restrepo had five receptions per Diaz.

Keontra Smith

who moved from striker to linebacker after previously having been a safety had four tackles, a sack, a pass breakup and per Diaz “

made a big tackle where it really felt like we had to change momentum kind of get the defense back going again and got everybody fired up on that sideline.”

Sixth-year defensive end Zach McCloud who moved from linebacker had a key sack late in the game on a long yardage play for the offense. Diaz said that the “guys upfront really stood out.”  When asked what he is looking for the rest of training camp, Diaz told the team “greatness comes from being consistently good.”
