The Miami basketball program finally receiving the National Letter of Intent from point guard Bensley Joseph is important for the Hurricanes future. Joseph officially signing in the 2021 Miami class boosts the Hurricanes to 24th nationally. Joseph will be a key player in the future of the Miami backcourt.

The Hurricanes return starting guards Kameron McGusty and Isaiah Wong, plus backup Harlond Beverly in 2021-22. Miami added point guard Charlie Moore as a transfer from DePaul during the offseason. Moore is expected to start with McGusty and Wong in the Hurricanes’ three-guard lineup this season.

McGusty and Moore are entering their final seasons of collegiate eligibility. Wong declared for the 2021 NBA Draft but withdrew last month announcing his return to Coral Gables. The likelihood is that with another strong season, Wong will likely enter the 2022 NBA Draft. Joseph projects as a starter in 2022-23 for Miami.

In addition to Joseph, Miami also signed four-star small forward Jakai Robinson and three-star shooting guard Nisine Poplar in the 2022 Class. Barring any departures or transfers during the 2022 offseason, the Miami basketball team projects to start Beverly, Joseph and Poplar during the 2022-2023 season.

After losing five transfers in the last year, Jim Larranaga and the Miami basketball staff have done a good job stabilizing the Hurricanes’ roster. Beverly and Joseph project to be the foundation Miami builds on for at least the 2022-23 season. The Hurricanes enter 2021-22 with three straight losing seasons.

Roster instability primarily because of injuries hindered the Hurricanes over the last three seasons. No team lost more games to injuries than the Miami basketball program during the 2020-21 season. Miami finished 10-17 overall and 4-15 in the ACC. Only center Nysier Brooks and Wong played every game in 2020-21.

Joseph is the 101st ranked player, 10th ranked point guard and the top-ranked player in Connecticut out of Putnam Science Academy. Robinson is 83rd overall, the 16th ranked small forward and third in Maryland out of Rock Creek Christian Academy in Upper Marlboro. Robinson is the highest-ranked 2021 Miami signee.
