Appearing as a guest on the Tobin and Leroy Show on 790 The Ticket this week, ESPN College Football Analyst Kirk Herbstreit told the hosts that Miami Hurricanes QB D’Eriq King can be the face of the sport in 2021. Herbstreit also spoke to hosts Brandon Tobin and Leroy Hoard about the chances Miami has against Alabama.

The Hurricanes and Crimson Tide open the season on September 4 in Atlanta. Herbstreit reiterated what Miami head coach Manny Diaz has said throughout the offseason that King has changed the culture of the Hurricanes quarterbacks. Herbstreit worked several Miami games in 2021.

As part of the top ESPN college football announcing team with play-by-play announcer Chris Fowler, Herbstreit called Miami’s victories over Louisville and Florida State in 2020 before behind the microphone for the Miami loss to Clemson last October. Herbstreit will likely call the Clemson-Georgia game in Charlotte week one.

King is getting a lot of buzz entering the 2021 season. The Miami Hurricanes QB appeared with Stephen A. Smith on ESPN this week to discuss his name, imagine and likeness deals and the prospect of opening the season against Alabama. King is confident in the chance Miami has to pull a massive upset.

"“D’Eriq King he could be the face of the sport this year…He’s impacted the Miami culture as much as anybody…That’s a tough way to start the season (against Alabama)…it’ll be a tough ask but you always have a chance in college football to win a game”"

If the Hurricanes defeat the Crimson Tide, the comments by Herbstreit about King being the face of college football this season could become prophetic. A big game by King against Alabama would set him off for a potential Heisman Trophy season. The other showcase game for Miami in 2021 is at North Carolina on October 16.

If the Hurricanes and Tar Heels get off to good starts, expect Fowler and Herbstreit to call the game between Miami and UNC in October. MIami and UNC are both coming off renaissance seasons in 2020. The Hurricanes improved from 6-7 to 8-3 and Tar Heels from 7-6 to 8-4. Miami 7-2 in the ACC in 2020 and UNC 7-3.
