Quarterback D’Eriq King being named the only Miami football player in the ESPN Top 100 is an indication the Hurricanes need to develop more top-end talent. King was ranked 36th on the ESPN list. Safety Bubba Bolden has been mentioned among the top players in college football by other media outlets for 2021.

For a school that has continually turned out NFL talent for multiple decades, King as the only player in the ESPN Top 100 is concerning. Cornerback Tyrique Stevenson, defensive end Deandre Johnson and wide receiver Charleston Rambo have frequently been mentioned among the top 2021 transfers.

After transforming the Miami offense in 2021 with offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee in their first season with the Hurricanes, King moved up nine spots in the ESPN rankings. If King continues to improve and the Miami offense develops he should be much higher on those rankings by the end of the 2021 season.

King leads 10 starters returning on the Miami offense. Tight end Brevin Jordan is the only starter the Hurricanes offense lost. Entering his fourth season with the Miami football program, Will Mallory will step into the starting role vacated by Jordan. Expect Mallory to put up similar numbers to Jordan.

"36. D’Eriq King,QB, Miami, SeniorLast year’s ranking: 45“After opting out of the 2019 season at Houston, King transferred to Miami and instantly transformed the Hurricanes’ offense. King threw for 23 TDs with just five picks and tallied more than 3,200 yards of offense. The season ended on a low note, however, as King injured his knee in Miami’s bowl game and required offseason surgery. The rehab hardly slowed him down. King was back running 7-on-7s this summer, and said he’s 100% healthy as he starts his final season with eyes on an ACC championship.”"

King is arguably the best dual-threat QB in college football.  If he matches the numbers he posted in 2020, King will set the Miami rushing record by a QB set by Malik Rosier. King needs seven rushing touchdowns to also match the record by a Miami QB set by Rosier. King is ready for 2021 after offseason ACL surgery.

Having King return as the leader of the Miami football team was essential entering the 2021 season. King is the biggest reason the Hurricanes are ranked by every major media outlet entering the 2021 season. Miami has a chance to validate their ranking when they open against Alabama on September 4 in Atlanta.
