Miami Hurricanes two biggest archrivals named most offensive mascots

The top and fourth-most offensive mascots in a poll of college football fans by Quality Logo Products are Miami Hurricanes arch rivals Florida State and Notre Dame. Florida State’s Chief Osceola topped the poll and the Notre Dame Leprechaun was fourth. From a Miami perspective, only Albert and Alberta Gator were missing.

The methodology of the poll was explained by Quality Logo Products. In short, 1,266 college football fans participated in the poll. Only 128 mascots were chosen. The Football Bowl Subdivision has 130 teams. Sixteen survey questions with eight randomized variations were in the poll.

The poll had 474 participants from the South and 270 from the Midwest that would be relevant to the locations of Florida State and Notre Dame. The Miami Hurricanes have played more games against Florida State than any other opponent. The Hurricanes have a 33-30 record all-time against the Seminoles.

Miami has played Notre Dame the sixth most times of any opponent. The Fighting Irish and their leprechaun own an 18-8-1 record against Sebastian the Ibis and the Hurricanes. Florida State is supported using the Seminoles and Chief Osceola as a nickname and mascot by the tribe. FSU does not consider Chief Osceola a mascot.

A separate list of the best mascots in college football ranked Northwestern’s Willie the Wildcat first. Sebastian the Ibis was emitted from any of the lists. A 2019 ranking of the best mascots in college football from Canes Warning’s main site Fansided, has Sebastian as the third-best mascot behind Georgia’s Uga and Texas’ Bevo.

The Virginia Cavalier was the other top 10 offensive mascots among ACC teams. Polls also were asked to rank the best, worst, sexiest, unsexiest and creepiest mascots in FBS. Wake Forest’s Demon D. mascot for the Demon Deacons was ranked as the fifth creepiest mascot as the only other ACC program on the list.

Cocky the Gamecock from South Carolina was named the fourth unsexiest mascot. Miami and South Carolina are scheduled to play in 2026 and 2027. The Gamecocks are the only other team on the future Miami schedule in the mascot rankings. Sebastian and the Miami Maniac baseball mascot are iconic in collegiate athletics.
