Miami Hurricanes wide receiver Charleston Rambo was brought in as a transfer from Oklahoma to improve the deep passing game. Mike Harley, Rambo and tight end Will Mallory provide quarterback D’Eriq King with three experienced and proven targets in the 2021 offense. Andrea Adelson of ESPN chose Rambo as a breakout star.
Rambo has quickly made an impact in the Miami Hurricanes passing game. In the first scrimmage of training camp Rambo had 60 receiving yards and a touchdown reception. Rambo is projected to start with Key’Shawn Smith on the outside with Harley as the slot receiver. Miami needs Rambo to have a breakout season.
Rambo had a breakout season as a sophomore at Oklahoma in 2019. Playing 14 games, Rambo had 43 receptions for 743 yards and five TDs as the Sooners’ number two receiver behind 2020 Dallas Cowboys’ first-round pick CeeDee Lamb. Those numbers fell to 25 receptions for 312 yards and three TDs in 2020.
Rambo also has the potential to be a dangerous kick returner for Miami in 2021. At Oklahoma, Rambo had 13 kick returns for 326 yards, averaging 25.1 yards per return. Rambo had 10 kick returns for 255 yards in 2020 as the main kick returner for Oklahoma. By the end of the season, Rambo could be a Biletnikoff Award contender.
"Who’s your breakout star?Andrea Adelson: Miami receiver Charleston Rambo, and it has nothing to do with his last name. OK it has a little to do with his last name. In all seriousness, Rambo has the potential to provide the type of explosive big plays that were sorely lacking for Miami last season. After transferring in following a disappointing final season with Oklahoma, Rambo opened eyes with his impressive performance in the spring game. Miami made it a priority this offseason to improve its deep ball, and to get there, it needs Rambo to be a force.Miami hasn’t had a 1,000-yard receiver since Allen Hurns in 2013, and with D’Eriq King back and more comfortable in Year 2 in the offense, the Hurricanes have a great chance to hit that mark."
Hurns had his own breakout season for Miami in 2013 with 62 receptions for 1,162 yards and six TDs. Prior to 2013, Hurns was a secondary receiver for Miami. Rambo was the second receiver for Oklahoma in 2019 then fell off in 2020. For Miami Rambo has a chance to be the leading receiver or share that mantle with Harley.
The Miami Hurricanes passing game should continue to develop in 2021. Rambo provides an excellent balance to Harley and Mallory. The impact Rambo should have for Miami improves the entire offense. Opposing defenses were able to stack the box and force Miami to throw last season.
The Hurricanes offense was not able to keep up in blowout losses to Clemson and North Carolina in 2020. Miami needs to be more competitive in the big games in 2020. For Miami to continue to develop offensive they need to generate more big plays and be balanced. Rambo could be the answer for a more explosive offense.
