Miami football team Top 25 ranking plummets

The Miami football team fell eight spots in the AP Media Poll and the USA Today Coaches poll despite multiple teams behind them losing. The Hurricanes are 22nd in the AP Poll and 24th in the USA Today Coaches Poll after being ranked 14th and 16th in the preseason. Several teams vaulted in the rankings to pass Miami.

UCLA and ACC Coastal rival Virginia Tech were the biggest movers into the Top 25. The Bruins vaulted 26 spots to move up to 16th and the Hokies advanced 19 places in the rankings and are now 21st. UCLA received 538 points in this week’s poll, Virginia Tech 274 and Miami 186. The Miami football team was one of many to plummet.

The Hurricanes and Hokies ACC Coastal Division rival North Carolina fell 13 spots to 22. North Carolina received 252 points in the USA Today Coaches Poll. North Carolina is below Miami in the AP after falling from 10th to 24th following their 17-10 loss at Virginia Tech on Friday night. Virginia Tech moved up to 19th in the AP poll.

Clemson was the only other ACC team ranked in both polls. The Tigers fell from third in the AP Media Poll and second in the USA Today Coaches Poll to sixth in both rankings. Clemson lost 10-3 in its season opener against Georgia in Charlotte. Virginia Tech was the only currently ranked ACC team this week to win.

Miami, Clemson and North Carolina all have to put week one behind them and focus on the rest of the season. Miami hosts Appalachian State on Saturday. All four of the ACC-ranked teams are home this weekend. Clemson hosts South Carolina State, North Carolina plays Georgia State and Virginia Tech, Middle Tennessee State.

Miami plays at North Carolina on October 16 and hosts Virginia Tech on November 20. The Hurricanes do not play Clemson this season. North Carolina and Virginia Tech are the only teams remaining on the Miami schedule currently ranked. Appalachian State who Miami hosts Saturday and Michigan State both received votes.
